1. Plant at the right time. Watermelons need warm temperatures to grow and ripen properly, so you'll want to make sure you plant your seeds at the right time of year. The ideal planting time is after all danger of frost has passed, when nighttime temperatures remain above 55°F (12°C).
2. Choose a sunny spot. Watermelons need lots of sun, so make sure you choose a spot that receives plenty of sunlight throughout the day – at least 8 hours or more per day is best! If your garden gets too much shade, consider using shade cloth to help create more direct sunlight exposure for your plants.
3. Water consistently. As with most other plants, watermelons need consistent watering during their growth cycle in order to develop properly. Keep soil moist (but not saturated) by providing one inch of water per week – either from rainfall or manual irrigation – for the entire growing season until harvest.
4. Provide proper nutrition and protection from pests and disease. Like other fruits and vegetables, watermelon plants will benefit from an appropriate amount of fertilizer such as compost or fish emulsion applied to the soil prior to planting; then again every 3 weeks during their growing cycle if needed. Also, make sure your plants have adequate space between them and around the perimeter in order to promote good airflow and prevent disease or pest infestations from spreading quickly between plants.
Following these simple tips will help ensure your watermelon patch yields healthy, tasty fruit all season long! Enjoy!
